History of Gaia Artificial Reef (Masks)

The Gaia Artificial Reef was established in November 2021 with breakwater rocks arranged in an oval formation, covering a diameter of approximately 70 meters. It is located within the Dasoudi Marine Protected Area.

On June 7th, 2022, two large white carnival masks, made of concrete, were placed on the site to enhance both its marine life and visual appeal. Each mask weighs around 12 tonnes and measures 4.20m x 2.50m. They stand upright on the southern side of the reef at a maximum depth of 17 meters.

The addition of the masks reflects Limassol’s carnival spirit and creates a unique combination of art, culture, and marine conservation.

Today, Gaia is a popular and colorful underwater landmark. Schools of amberjacks are often seen circling the masks, with groupers hiding among the rocks. The site offers a visually rich and enjoyable experience for divers.

This site is ideal for Open Water Scuba Divers and above.
